Matt Escobar is the Manager of Philanthropy, Annual Support Gifts, for the Mercy Medical Center Merced Foundation. A Brooklyn, New York native, Matt has spent nearly 30 years working in community-focused roles devoted to service, advocacy, and strengthening the communities he serves.

He began his work as a peer educator in the underserved neighborhood where he grew up, an experience that sparked a lifelong commitment to helping others.
After beginning his professional community work in California, Matt served in roles supporting vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, as well as serving as a domestic violence and sexual assault advocate and shelter manager. He later worked as a Community Education Coordinator at Merced College, where he applied his degree in Education to design programs that connected families, learners, and community partners.

In his role with the Mercy Medical Center Merced Foundation, Matt focuses on donor engagement,stewardship, and supporting annual giving initiatives that advance the mission of the hospital. He is
committed to fostering meaningful relationships and encouraging a culture of generosity that benefits
the community.

As a proud husband and father of six, Matt and his family are the creators of the Smiley Riley Movement, a kindness initiative honoring their daughter Riley. The project continues to inspire compassion and connection in communities around the world. His family remains central to his purpose and values, and his deep commitment to his community is reflected in both his personal and professional life.
